Our Story

Tahki Stacy Charles, Inc. is a New York-based yarn company inspired by its relationship with Fashion Avenue. We currently have a portfolio of 5 distinct brands that can be found at leading yarn shops across the United States, as well as online. Tahki Stacy Charles is owned by Diane Friedman and Stacy Charles.

Diane & Stacy 2010

Diane Friedman founded Tahki Yarns in 1968, when she discovered a mill in County Donegal Ireland that was spinning lovely wool tweed weaving yarns for hand-loomed fabrics.  From that trip, Donegal Tweed was born. Some years later, her search for the world’s most beautiful mercerized cotton brought her to a mill in Greece, where she developed Cotton Classic. These are just two of the many natural-fiber yarns which are the company’s trademark. Today, as then, Tahki Yarns is known for high-quality and affordable yarns, with a pattern line inspired by American sportswear.

Stacy Charles seemingly grew up in the yarn industry. He started in the business working for his Uncle Sam and Aunt Irma, who supplied buttons to the RTW market and imported European yarns for the hand-knitting market. Some years later, Stacy’s love of European fashion and knitting inspired him to start his own eponymous company, importing the prestigious Filatura di Crosa line for the American market, along with countless designer labels, most notably MISSONI.

In the Fall of 1999, Diane and Stacy, two New York-based friends and colleagues, decided to merge their companies and in January of 2000 TAHKI STACY CHARLES, Inc. was born. It was a match made in heaven! Tahki Stacy Charles covers the entire yarn market bringing American knitters beautiful yarns, knitting and crochet patterns at every price point.

Our Yarns

StacyCharles-fineyarns_LogoSTACY CHARLES FINE YARNS – TSC’s high-fashion designer collection. Textures and colors inspired by the world of fashion are the hallmark of this brand. All the yarns, such as Crystal, Luna and Stella, are customized to mix-and-match, creating unique contrasts of texture in coordinated color palettes. These sophisticated yarns are spun from the best luxury fibers available, including mohair, merino, silk, and cashmere. Patterns are trend-driven, inspired by the world’s runways and NYC’s Seventh Avenue ready-to-wear collections. In 2016, Stacy Charles and the renowned Italian mill, SESIA, strengthened their relationship, pooling their creative talents to introduce the “S LINE” to the American market. “S LINE” yarns include classics, such as 100% Merino wool NORDICA, and fashion yarns like BLUEBELL and LUCCICA. SESIA, which is at the forefront of responsible yarn production (and whose company motto is WHERE FASHION IS GREEN) also offers eco-friendly, organic fiber yarns in its BIO Collection, including such yarns as BIOMERINO.

PrintTAHKI YARNS – Innovative natural-fiber yarns at affordable prices have made Tahki Yarns a favorite go-to brand for over 40 years. In addition to Tahki Yarns’ most popular and long-running yarns, Donegal Tweed and Cotton Classic, Tahki is appreciated for its variety, from the natural color palette of ARUBA and the denim-driven shades of SKINNY JEANS to vibrant self-patterning multicolor yarns, such as Tandem, all part of the Tahki Yarns brand. Weekend casual looks are the design sensibility of this collection. Tahki also offers all-natural eco-friendly fibers from the TERRA COLLECTION, one of the first US brands to embrace the environmentally-conscious trend, with its premiere collection in 2007. From chunky wool rovings, MONTANA and BIG MONTANA, to organic cotton COTTON BALL, Terra Collection yarns provide beauty and comfort for every season.

TahkiSelect – a fresh, fun approach to knit and crochet yarns, TahkiSelect offers value-priced wool-blend yarns with a twist. Each skein or ball creates an accessory project like a hat or cowl (with the pattern printed on the ball band) and provides the decorative accent as well! Hudson combines 2 yarns—a faux fur and a printed chainette—in a single ball. And Poppy—a super-bulky wool-blend—features 10 yarn flowers to slide along your knitting or crocheting and place where you will.
